13 Of The Most Beautiful Proposals For A Planned Pedestrian Bridge In London | DeMilked

via 13 Of The Most Beautiful Proposals For A Planned Pedestrian Bridge In London | DeMilked.

Mar 2, 2015

Tower Bridge isn’t the only bridge in London, though it is the most iconic. Well, The London Borough of Wandsworth is having a competition for a new bridge between Nine Elms and Pimlico, and the results so far seem somewhat crazy. It has to be a pedestrian and a cyclists bridge, so the plans feature many long and winding ramps. Other than that, it’s a free game, and people are going wild with the plans. While there are plenty of regular, one ark, this-is-somewhat-futuristic bridges, others are totally crazy, looking like alien infestation or a ruler that someone dropped on the river. Some add lights, some even enclose the bridge!

Of course, you can’t go too wild. The envisaged capital funding would be around 40 million of Queen’s own pound (around $60 million). So the designers shouldn’t go too crazy, but, as you can see from some of the projects, they still do. A few even think that straight line from A to B is an affront to good taste and are trying to make the route longer via various curving designs.

Maybe it’s London itself that brings out the ambition in people.

As a Londoner, albeit by adoption, I can attest the need for additional cross river facilities.  Compared with some other European river cities, London has relatively few crossings and this particular stretch, between Vauxhall and Chelsea Bridges, is particularly long.  The Wandsworth side is also currently undergoing extensive redevelopment, with a new US Embassy leading the way.

As to the above allusion to straight lines and short distances, anyone familiar with London knows that a straight line is seldom the shortest distance between any two points in town.  Given the considerable distance between the two older bridges mentioned earlier, a few more meters will hardly matter.

The Royal Palace, Phnom Penh

Everywhere Once

Royal Palace Throne Hall, Phnom Penh

We had begun to feel a little underwhelmed by the sightseeing at some of our last few stops in Asia. The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh cured us of that.
